Flip Book Exhibition

Stories from the Land of Morning Calm

Time: September 23 – October 20.
Venue: Old Viborg Museum, Hjultorvet 4, 8800 Viborg

At this year’s VAF exhibition Flip Book – Stories from the Land of Morning Calm, VAF guests have the chance to experience some of the finest contemporary South Korean animation and illustration artists.

The Flip Book exhibition, curated by Ilmin Museum of Art, seeks to rethink the embedded animation genres as an extended form of contemporary art.

Flip Book is divided into two parts.

  • The Part I, titled Studio between Frames (動畵製作所), displays the production process of animation by globally recognized Korean directors, who discover the commonalities between animation genres and contemporary art.
  • The Part II, #An Anecdote of Submarine Journey_ Status Update includes exhibits created by visual artists who expand on existing media, such as drawings, graphic design, games, videos, and VR, to visualize the narrative elements of Science Fiction (SF) animation for social media based on fan fiction.

This exhibition not only introduces the renowned Korean animators and directors who mainly focus on fine arts, documentary, design, music and so on as opposed to commercial animation, but also top notch manual labor or narrative elements of traditional animation in the digital environment in a range of 3-D, 4-D movie and Webtoon to VR.

Thus, under current media landscapes like post-cinemas or SNS, the ultimate aim of the exhibition is to investigate socio-cultural issues, applying diverse philosophical and aesthetical discourse into contemporary culture in the post digital era.

The Flip Book Exhibition presents works by:

  • Lee Sung-Gang – My Beautiful Girl, Mari
  • Oh Sung-yun, A Hen Into the Wild
  • Toonbwa – Elquiness
  • Hyesoo Park 20C Future
  • Mackerel Safranski – Drawing Without Face
  • Studio Yog – Theory of Nothing
